Behind The Scenes...

The following are exclusive shots taken behind the scenes of my Victorian Era inspired photoshoot. The location was at Freemason's Hall, which was absolutely amazing! The pillars, marbled floor and stair-well was to die for and created the perfect old century atmosphere. The foyer was quite dull in light which gave a cold eery feeling, luckily Jesse Mullins was on the scene with lights, lights and yes more lights ( and not to forget his massive reflective umbrella)!!! We experimented with colour by using blue gels over the lights, we also did one in yellow but in the end didn't up needing it. My shot oozed a gothic nature but with a subtle almost haunting warmth.

I had such a wonderful day and also achieved and learned alot! I have to thank my amazing crew who consisted of; the beautiful Alex Dawson who modelled my dress, she was so elegant and really capitvated the classical look I was going for in her amazing poses and general posture. The forever talented Jesse Mullins, my photographer, he was so extremely active on ideas! We had a glorious time bouncing off ways to best show garment with light, texture and positioning. Remarkable Jing Jing Hang did the most creative job with the hairstyling, creating a look from a picture I had chosen and just bringing it to life right infront of my eyes. I love how she continuously updated me when she was practicing on mannequins and real people to get it exactly right. Her creativity and accuracy astounds me! Who could ever forget darling Renee Burns, the make-up artist!!! So extremely proud of how Alex looked, STUNNING AS!! I am lost for words the make-up is exactly how I envisaged it, gorgeous smokey eyes, nude lips and amazing sculpturing. P.S Renee, your fanning skills A+.Thank-you guys had so much fun with you all!!!

Collection Sketches...

Design #6:

This dress is the highlight of the collection and will be used in the photoshoot. The colours and design of the garment are based on the rustic oil paintings of that time and 'My Fair Lady' (starring Audrey Hepburn). It features a sheer high neck, frilled 1/2 sleeve top connected to a figure hugging panelled sweetheart bodice. The skirt consists of three layers; one of these is sheer, which flows to the ground. The back consists of a simple bustle and crinoline-lined bow. The colours of this design include burnt orange, caramelised yellow and accent of black.

Design #5:

To cater for the more conservative women in my market, I have introduced a long-sleeved dress for those  who aren't as adventuruous with loud colours or showing skin. My muse for this design included images of past and present races. The main feature of the dress are the twio tiers of transparent fabric flowing from underneath the empire line. The dress is an a-line silhouette with low circular back. The colours of this piece are white-cream and black (traditional Cup colours).

Design #4:

I imagined a Cinderella-like feel when designing this dress. I imagined the classical horse-drawn carriage and disney-esque romance. The skirt features three layers; two of cool blue and one of white-cream. From the hip to under the bust, diagonal ruching is introduced. The bust panel features a princess line and is emphasised by an empire line and neck detail. There will be a small cut-out of fabric in the centre of the neck design, with the rest being connected to a sheer frilled sleeve top for stableness. The back will also feature a frilled bustle with three asymmetrical tiers. The colours of this design feature cool blue, ice blue and white-cream.

Design #3:

The idea for this dress is taken from the corsetry and under-wear worn in the Victorian/ Edwardian period. The sensual black and white imagery featured on the pinboard, aswell as the battle between light and dark has influenced me heavily. The design features a figure hugging bodice with low circular neckline. The skirt is an a-line silhouette and the V-pointed waist has a transparent frill increasing in length as it makes it around to the back of the dress. The colour of this garment will be white-cream.

Design #2:

This design was created by taking inspiration of the classic home-based wear of the Victorian Era. The skirt flows elegantly below the empire line, with detail around the neckline and bust area. I have also aquired a bustle and two tiers at the back, to dress it up a little more. I like the off-shoulder detail and low bust panels that provides a hint of seduction along with the modest knee-length hemline. This design will be of lilac and beetroot hues, with accents of black and white-cream used on the off-shoulder straps, neckline and empire line band and frill.

Design #1:

Taking in the gothic romanticism of the Victorian period I have created this little black number. It features a tapered skirt and sheer waist frill, which has one sheer tier at the back. I have modernised the feel of this garment by keeping the sweetheart neckline and introducing a rounded strap connecting the two shoulder straps. A small bow has also been added for feminine detail on the front of the waist. The colour palette of this dress is black.

Design Brief...

·         Concept

Entitled ‘Classical Beauty’, my range will feature six outfits inspired by the Victorian era. I will be specialising in women’s race wear and occasional wear. I am inspired by rustic oil paintings of the time, Pygmalion, edgy images that play on light and dark, red carpet glamour and Victorian inspired hairstyles and images. I love the fall of beads and way feathers can be sculptured and softened.

·         Market

My range will cater for women sized 8-20, aged between 18-50. She will be an elegant and sophisticated woman with a taste for the traditions of racing. Often found in the reserved marquees or members lounge she is well-known and has a good reputation. Financially she is middle to upper class. She is lady-like and bantering is one of her highlights.

If she is married she is so happily with a couple children. While her children are growing she entitles herself as a housewife and the husband becomes the only income earner, however once her children are old enough she will enter the work force once again. When working she earns similar to her husband at $60,000+ per annum.

This range also caters for the young and adventurous singles.

If she is single she likes to mingle with other singles. She is fun and a little flirtatious but remains in good taste in respect for her peers. She is living away from home in a city view apartment and works full-time. She earns between $50,000+ per annum.

·         Fabric and Trims

I will be using woven fabrics in all my designs. The use of chiffon for sheer and light layers, while the mains of the garments being constructed with charmuese and satin crepes. Ideally I would like to use silk however with so many circular skirts in my designs this would prove quite expensive to me and the customer. Some nice polyester is available which I will scope out. Also with trims chiffon ruffles and floral trims will be used with maybe an accent of pearls and beading.

·         Trends

I won’t be following the current trends in my range as I am using the Victorian era as my inspiration. I will be modernising my designs a little so they are less matron looking and more youthful. The season I will be designing for is Spring, as the parade is during the Spring Carnival. I will also be designing hats to parade with the outfits, to suit the theme. The colour them I will be using includes jewel colours for the more elaborate and expensive design, however the simpler more inexpensive dresses will be either black, cream or a mix.

The era that I am designing for is when people still got along via horse and carriage, they way they dressed was most modest compared to now and going to the races was only open for the extremely wealthy and well dressed. Etiquette was of the upmost importance and morals were followed religiously. I would like to incorporate this as a message in my range that we can go back and relieve that time, again and again.

Inspiration Board...

My range is inspired by the Victorian Era. I love the gothic romanticism projected from this era and the constant battle between light and dark. The images I have included are; rustic paintings, images and movies of that time, dramatic and edgy photo shoots (depicting both angelic and demonic views). Also inspiring hairstyles and red carpet glamour that have taken influence from this period, images of  race wear fashion, similar designer styles and old style hats. I love the fall of pearls and the structure of crinoline lined bows, the graceful edge ruffled feathers provoke and the feminimity crushed fabric flowers entale.

Wonderful News this blog is up and running!!

I'm Kayla Jasmine and I am currently studying fashion design at a advanced diploma level. The information and imagery I will be posting will be focused around the end of year collection and my progress towards this goal. It will be a collection inspired by the Victorian/ Edwardian era. The garments will be appropriate for race wear and occasional wear.
